Mental Health

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health problems, affecting approximately 10% of the population. Some start in childhood, others later in life.

The following anxiety disorders are the most common:

  • Panic disorder;
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder;
  • Generalized anxiety disorder;
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder;
  • Phobias.

What causes anxiety disorders?

  • It appears that a combination of genetic inheritance and life experiences, such as long-term exposure to abuse, violence or poverty, makes some people more susceptible to these illnesses.
  • Brain chemistry also appears to play a role as medications that alter levels of chemicals in the brain can relieve symptoms.
  • Individuals with specific personality traits, such as low self-esteem or poor coping skills, may also be more prone.

Treatment

Since all anxiety disorders may potentially impair one's ability to function in everyday life, seeking treatment is important.

Unfortunately, many people with anxiety disorders do not seek treatment because they fear the reactions of co-workers, family or friends. They do not realize that their current state may be seriously harmful to their life and that, if untreated, their condition may worsen.

Please remember that only a physician or licensed therapist can diagnose an anxiety disorder. You should, however, be aware that, according to some studies, a significant number of general physicians are unfamiliar with the symptoms and all available treatments for anxiety disorders. Therefore, seeking appropriate treatment at a clinic that specializes in anxiety disorders may be preferable.
